Running Blog: Bad outing

9.20.09
I have had a great weekend. The weather has been great!! I was looking forward for my long run this morning. I decided to only do 5 miles instead of 10 due to a time restraint as well as boot camp starts tomorrow and I don't want to over do it like last time. The weather is sunny, little breeze and 59. I headed out to the lake for a nice easy run; at least that was my plan. I started running and felt really tight. Not uncommon for me for the first mile or less. I kept pushing forward. By a mile and a half, my shin splints were killing me!!! My legs felt so heavy and the muscles felt they may pop if I took another step. Mentally, I was wrecked!! I slowed down and at one point even walked for a few minutes thinking that would release my tightness. No, it only made the situation worse. I got back to the car and stretched some. Tried to make another lap around the lake but quickly realized it wasn't going to work. I chalked this run up to a failure and went home. Iced my legs and put on my ace bandages for the rest of the day.

I am not entirely sure of what is going on with my legs. I am going to experiment. It may have been the treadmill work from a few days ago, but I am not convinced of that. I have noticed that the only time my legs feel really good are when I wear my running shoes, my clogs for work or bare foot around the house. If I wear my old tennies or flip flops, my shin splints flare up. I have lived in my flip flops for the last few days. I am going to try to only wear my running shoes for the next week or so and see what happens. I may have to go get a new pair of running shoes and use the old ones for "running" around town.
